The incredible recent discovery of a group of 24 well preserved bronze statues in Tuscany, Italy, has contributed in generating renovate interest worldwide for this fascinating class of materials, which often times represent remarkable pieces of art of the ancient Classical world.

After a quick introduction to the use of bronze for casting statues in the ancient Mediterranean civilizations, this conversation will explore techniques and artistic outputs in the bronze metallurgy in Greece and Rome, concluding the journey with an artistic and historical analysis of some of the most famous bronze statues on display across European museums. These will include the renowned Riace Bronzes, the "Lupa Capitolina" (Capitoline She-Wolf) and the Marcus Aurelius equestrian statue in Rome.

Led by an expert on Archaeology of the Roman Provinces, dr. Veronica Iacomi, this Conversation will give the chance of a deep insight into both the technical and the artistic aspects of bronze statuary in the Greaco-Roman world. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge on ancient art history as well as with a new awareness of how even pieces of pure art can contribute in the reconstruction of the past.
