In the last few years, the term "fascism" has become an umbrella term for any and all criticisms levied by liberals, conservatives, and everything in between against many of the world’s governments. Few people understand the actual origins of fascism, an Italian political ethos that burst onto the world stage after World War One that continues to influence world governments to this day.

World War One was a watershed event in European history. It devastated European economies, left almost an entire generation of men dead on the battlefield, and with the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, instilled an immediate fear of Stalinist Communism in recovering nations.

By explaining the origins of Italian fascism and its influence on Nazi ideology, this seminar will provide an introduction to the history of the most consequential political ethos in modern history. In an age of unsubstantiated opinions and “alternative facts,” understanding the history of fascism, and analyzing the reasons why it rose to prominence in the twentieth century is necessary for understanding the recent rise in twenty-first century fascist ideology.

It is important to remember that to explain is not to excuse, and to understand is not to forgive. But ignoring the reasons why fascism remains attractive to so many people is the easiest way to fall into its nefarious trappings once again

Led by Samuél Lopez-Barrantes, an expert in modern philosophy and intellectual history, this interactive seminar will cover the story of the rise of fascism in Europe and the implications for modern politics. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better understanding of fascism and the complex reasons why it remains a deranged but attractive ideology to many.

Samuél is a writer and musician who has lived in Paris since 2008. He holds an M.A. in European Society from University College London and an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Samuél teaches creative writing at the Sorbonne and is also in an American folk-rock trio, Slim & The Beast, which has toured extensively throughout Europe and has been featured numerous times in Rolling Stone France.

The History of Fascism Review

This was an insightful class that explored the history of fascism in Italy and Germany. The class moved at a lively pace and I would liked it to be longer as there was so much more to explore. Samuel was extremely knowledgeable about the topic.
