Istanbul is a city suspended between East and West, Europe and Asia. Join Luca Orlandi for a visual and narrative portrait of a city unlike any other. We will start with the rise of the Byzantine Empire and follow this unique city through the Ottoman Era and on to the consolidation of the Turkish Republic, stopping along the way for observations of the curiosities of its architecture and urban spaces.

In this seminar, we will travel virtually around the central historic area of Istanbul using archival material such as old maps, engravings, drawings, and photography. We’ll cover almost two millennia of history and discuss the numerous rises and the falls of the city under different rulers. We will explore the city’s conversion from a Christian Byzantine capital into an Islamic Muslim one seen through the lens of the architectural and built environment. We will discover places, buildings, and masterpieces along the way.

Led by an expert on architectural history, Luca Orlandi, this interactive seminar will focus on the history of one of the most important and unique cities of the world. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased desire to discover this millennial city, whose history, charm and beauty have fascinated travelers throughout the centuries.

. A well presented comprehensive lecture from an historical and architectural point of view. This could easily be a 2 hour lecture.

There's no question that Luca knows his subject matter well and his talk was very informative. The presentation, however, could use some of the enthusiasm that so many Context lecturers display. That said, it was certainly not an unpleasant 90 minutes.
