Among connoisseurs of art, the museum Folkwang in the German town of Essen is a legend. Join us on a tour of its masterpieces, and discover the tumultuous history of this all too often overlooked institution as Sabry Amroussi guides you to famous works within one of his all-time favorite museums.

One of the finest museums in Germany showing the art of the previous two centuries, this institution is among the first public spaces in Germany where travelers and locals could view  ‘modern art’ in the early 20th century. Boasting a stellar collection of works by the likes of Casper David Friedrich, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent van Gogh and substantial holdings of German expressionist art, this delightful museum deserves to be known by a much larger audience.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection in Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.

Fascinating!

Very interesting and informative presentation about this little known museum, which has many art treasures. Mr. Amroussi knows his subject and presents it dynamically.

This was wonderful. It is really great to learn about wonderful art collections currently considered off the beaten (tourist) track. Sabry, as always, brings it to life.
