No writer can discuss literature in Paris without mentioning Ernest Hemingway, and it's impossible to mention Hemingway without discussing the art of storytelling. This seminar will explore the life, works, and legacy of this noted literary figure as well as his important relationship with the City of Lights.
Through a combination of literary history, biography, and lessons in the craft of writing, Paris-based novelist this seminar offers a new way to think about the nature and shape of storytelling by recounting the lesser-known tales of the men and women who helped turn Hemingway into a legend. Drawing on his expertise in European history as well as his work as an author and professor, Samuél offers a new way to think about the facts, fictions, and myths of Hemingway's life in Paris in this lively discussion about modernism, Hemingway, and the art of telling a tale.
Led by an expert in Parisian literary history and storytelling, Samuél Lopez-Barrantes, this interactive seminar offers a deep introduction to Ernest Hemingway and his life in Paris. Designed to inform as well as educate, participants will emerge with an alternative understanding of this important figure within literary history.

Samuél is a writer and musician who has lived in Paris since 2008. He holds an M.A. in European Society from University College London and an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Samuél teaches creative writing at the Sorbonne and is also in an American folk-rock trio, Slim & The Beast, which has toured extensively throughout Europe and has been featured numerous times in Rolling Stone France.

Great talk!

This was a great talk led by a skilled teacher who knew his stuff and knew how to communicate in a concise and entertaining way. I loved the elucidating quotes and I loved how he framed the discussion in the context of story constructs. Expertly done!

Hemingway in Paris

Samuel’s presentation provided a fascinating, unique perspective of Hemingway’s complex life writ large yet in the context of his Paris experience. His passion for and knowledge of the subject were extensive. He was able to address intimate aspects of the man, his life and loves, in a conversant manner. Very personable!
