Rome, Italy has been built on layers–each one equally vital to the Eternal City's historic legacy. However, Rome is also a chaotic modern metropolis, the capital of a modern nation. Archaeologists in this city carefully balance the extraordinary heritage with the infrastructure needs of a lively and modern city. Have they unearthed all of the Ancient Roman city? Not yet.

Our conversation will focus on the present-day landscape of Rome, at the intersection of new scholarship with well-known facts. We will focus on the latest restoration and preservation efforts upon ancient buildings. We will also develop an understanding of how the city government confronts the neverending challenges of preserving priceless cultural and historical heritage landmarks through the ages.

Urban Archaeology is not only about digging below the city, but also preserving what it’s above the ground through restoration and enhancement projects. The Mausoleum of Augustus and the Roman Forum are two examples we will examine together during this talk.

New fragments of the Ancient city are being uncovered gradually over time. From excavations below local Universities to extensive digs carried out during the Subway system construction– projects owned by many tradesmen and specialists have brought to light new discoveries that now enrich the already abundant archaeological landscape of Rome.

Led by Dimosthenis Kosmopoulos, a classical archaeologist, this interactive seminar will focus on Urban Archaeology in Rome. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge about the challenging but at the same time fascinating archaeological field in Rome.

During his university studies at “La Sapienza” in Rome, Dimosthenis participated in several national and international projects, such as the study of Latin epigraphy and Roman pottery as well as various archaeological excavations in different areas of Rome (Roman Forum, Palatine, Mausoleum of Augustus). His work as an archaeologist brought him to carry out research in classical art and architecture, exploring in particular the relationship between iconography and architecture as ancient Greek and Roman artistic expressions. Dimosthenis completed his Ph.D. with a thesis on temple architecture in the Italian peninsula during the Republican period. This topic became his area of expertise. His knowledge of archaeology, ancient art history and Roman architecture is the key that he uses to share his unique perspective on the Eternal City.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Dr. Dimo was an excellent presenter. I enjoyed seeing the archaeological sites as well as hearing/seeing the history of the different time periods.
I have been to Rome several times, but after hearing his lecture, I'm ready to go again and hopefully get a tour with Context Travel!

Can't wait to go to Rome again!

After this terrific talk on urban archaeology focused on Rome, I can hardly wait to go back again and see the latest museums, restorations and discoveries. Having an authentic archaeologist -who happens to be an engaging presenter -take us threw how it works and what the latest developments are was perfect.
