Our discussion will start with the Church of St Peter’s in Chains, home to Michelangelo’s Moses. The sculpture is the dramatic center of Julius II’s tomb, a masterpiece that the florentine artist called “the tragedy of my life”. From there, we will discover his Christ the Redeemer statue in the Church of S. Maria Sopra Minerva and his troubled history. Finally, we will discuss the role of Michelangelo as an architect in Rome: how he measured himself with the examples and remains of the ancient imperial city in the Church of St. Maria degli Angeli – and how we reached the pinnacle of religious arts with his commissions for St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican City.
Led by an expert Art Historian and a native Roman, Cecilia Martini, this conversation has been designed to unearth the traces left by the artist in the city beyond the most famous venues, the relationships that he had with some of the greatest popes of the century, and discover how he celebrated his Faith through his artistic creation. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge about the personality and the work of Michelangelo, of Renaissance Art and Architecture in Rome.
This seminar has been designed as part of an extended series, each spotlighting a unique church in Rome. For additional details, please click here.

Really enjoyed this webinar and learned a lot. I like the focus on the less “popular” Michelangelo pieces.
I so enjoyed this session! I learned so much!!
Good introduction, with in depth scholarship, to Michaelangelo masterpieces in Rome which might get overlooked.
