While New York City is home to iconic attractions, venues, outdoor spaces, architecture and museums, written about in countless publications and guides, there are still some rather lesser-known locations in the city that never sleeps. This course aims to introduce you to those less famous, but just as breathtaking, museums scattered throughout the Big Apple's avenues and alleyways.

Led by a New York-based Art Historian Jessica Sternbach, this course will take you off the beaten path, away from the museums any old tourist knows to visit. This course will illuminate the hidden gems of New York City collections. From the elaborate tapestry-lined walls of the Cloisters to the majestic silks of the Rubin to the intricate designs of the Cooper Hewitt and the literary history housed in the Cooper Museum, this course hopes to inspire explorations beyond the norm.

Course Day 1: The Met Cloisters
This course will talk about the construction and collection of the Met Cloisters. The class will get to experience the medieval splendor of the building from the comfort of their home.

Course Day 2: The Cooper Hewitt
This course takes visitors into the Cooper Hewitt and discusses the most diverse and comprehensive design collections in existence. This lecture will untangle the connections between art and design.

Course Day 3: The Morgan Library
This lecture takes visitors into he Morgan library, not only to appreciate the historic collections on display but also to delve into the history of the building and its owner.

Course Day 4: The Rubin
The Rubin is truly a hidden gem of New York City, tucked away in the Village. This lecture will shine a light on the fabulous collection.

Course Day 5: The Brooklyn Museum
Taking a trip from the Isle of Manhatten this lecture will take visitors through the Brooklyn Museum's collection, which spans from Ancient Egypt to contemporary Costumes.

Jessica Sternbach began studying Art History at Willamette University and was instantly drawn to the vivid colors and impeccable detail of Northern Renaissance artworks. She continued this passion for the Northern painters throughout her education at the Institute of Fine Arts (MA) and Temple University where she is currently working on her Ph.D. Travel has always been a passion for Jessica who studied abroad in Rome during her junior year at Willamette and returned to the Eternal City for a summer to work at Context Travel’s Rome office. Since that time, she has visited several countries checking off her art “bucket list.” During her time in Los Angeles, she worked at the Getty Center and the Getty Villa.

Just what I needed

My daughter lives in Brooklyn. We have enjoyed the most famous museums over the years, but we were running out of ideas. Next time I visit, we will have at least 3 new museums to visit, thanks to this series. Jessica's presentations were full of history and beautiful pictures of the items in the collections. If you love museums and live close to or travel to New York, this series is perfect for you.
