This seminar will study the ways in which architects in the U.S. not only contributed to the history of modern architecture but also established a unique vernacular vocabulary of the postmodern building that influenced architects as well as artists all over the world. It’s a fitting conversation for anyone with an interest in architecture who is looking to learn how residential and commercial buildings were transformed through a carefully curated series of examples.
We will explore canonical examples of office complexes, civic buildings, and theatre structures in major metropolitan areas such as Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia, as well as lesser-known city residences, country homes, airport terminals, and specialized structures on college campuses across the country. Architects and firms to be discussed include Denise Scott Brown, Walter Gropius, Raymond Hood, Philip Johnson, Louis Kahn, Julia Morgan, Robert Moses, Richard Neutra, I.M. Pei, Mies van der Rohe, Paul Rudolph, Eero Saarinen, Skidmore/Owings/Merrill, Anne Tyng, Robert Venturi, Frank Lloyd Wright.
Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art and architecture, Jennie Hirsh, this interactive seminar will consider the ways in which these visionaries transformed both commercial and residential buildings in urban as well as suburban locales. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the ways in which emigré European architects as well as U.S.-born practitioners left behind a heterogeneous legacy of architectural innovation in terms of form and materials that remains legendary today.

This conversation is part of a series on architects with Dr. Jennie Hirsh. Each session is designed to be enjoyed as a stand-alone seminar, or as part of the series.
