Our spotlight on Claude Monet (1840-1926) examines the work of the founder of the Impressionist movement. Through a comprehensive but accessible introduction to the oeuvre of the artist, we will explore Monet’s contribution to modern art history. While analyzing autobiographical information to better grasp the inspiration sources of the painter, we will proceed to an in-depth analysis of his most celebrated works created en plein air.

Disappointed with traditional art lessons at universities, Monet became a student of Charles Gleyre in Paris in 1862, where he met Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Frédéric Bazille, and Alfred Sisley. Together they shared new approaches to art, painting the effects of light en plein air with broken color and rapid brushstrokes. Monet eventually started exhibiting his work together with Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley, Cézanne, Degas, and Morisot under the name the Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, and Engravers, for which Monet was a leading figure. At the first exhibition, in 1874, he displayed Impression, Sunrise, to which the art critic Louis Leroy wrote a hostile review. Leroy then coined the term "Impressionism" which came to denominate the entire group.

During our conversation, we will examine several of Monet’s early works that prefigure his interest in variations of color and light, after which we will analyze his works included in the independent Impressionist exhibitions. We will end with an in-depth analysis of his latest series of works depicting his garden and waterlilies at Giverny, a theme that preoccupied him for over twenty years.

Great intro to Monet

I came into this with very little detailed knowledge of Monet. I had listened to an earlier excellent Context Talk on Musée d'Orsay and got inspired to do Monet next as a natural starting point on the Impressionists. Dr Lelik did a great job to go over his life and work. Now I really want to learn more

Claude Monet

Outstanding talk about the life and works of Monet. As a huge fan of Impressionism, I thought I knew what there was to know. I was wrong. What works so well in these seminars is the combination of stories of the artist's life and his works.
