‘If the Earth were a single state, Istanbul would be its capital.’ – Napoleon Bonaparte
The Galata district of Istanbul is a crossroads in every sense of the word. From antiquity to modern-day, its streets have weathered countless changes in political ownership and religious dominance –– while continuing to maintain its cultural independence. During this conversation, we will explore the Galata district from a local vantage point. For centuries, this area has been a unique crossroad of many Eastern Mediterranean cultures and religions.
Led by an expert on Genoese colonies in the Eastern Mediterranean, Luca Orlandi, this interactive seminar will discuss the development of Galata through the main phases that characterize the district's history. Tailored to give accurate details and to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased and deep knowledge of the impressive and rich architectural heritage still visible across the Galata.

Luca Orlandi is an architect and an architectural historian. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at University of Genoa (Italy) and obtained a PhD in 2005 from the Polytechnics of Turin (Italy), within the program: History and Critics of the Architectural and Environmental Heritage. He lives in Istanbul and works as Assistant Professor Dr. in the Faculty of Architecture and Design at Özyeğin University (OZU). He teaches courses such as: History of Architecture, Contemporary Architecture, and Architectural Design Studio. He often participates in lectures, seminars, and workshops in other Turkish universities and abroad, mainly in Italy. He is an active member of ICOMOS Italy and his fields of interest cover several topics like Ottoman Architecture and Master Sinan, Contemporary Turkish Architecture, as well as Genoese Heritage in the Orient and Travelogue and Narratives about the Levant.

Great Presentation!

I was quite impressed by Professor Orlandi’s presentation on Istanbul’s Galata District. He was stimulating, excited to convey his knowledge. It was great to discover more of Istanbul’s history and how it is still alive in its architecture, walls, etc.. I would recommend him highly as a teacher and speaker!

Fascinating cultural and architectural history of Galata neighborhood

Dr. Orlandi's presentation took me to an area I am unlikely to physically visit, and revealed the complex history of Galata, across the Bosporous from the center of Istanbul. This course expanded on information in the Context lectures by Dr. Thomas Madden, and illustrates the development and changing face of this multicultural, multiethnic area. I hope to read more of Galata/Pera's history, and this was an evocative introduction. Thanks!
