Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in Europe and a place where countless diverse civilizations and cultures left their mark and identity. This conversation will trace the history and evolution of Lisbon through the ages, as we see how some neighborhoods have frozen in time, while others have adopted a more cosmopolitan feel. This is the perfect opportunity for those looking to learn about the many different facets of this wonderful Portuguese city.

After a first and general introduction, we will explore the spatial and historical organization of the city through its most relevant neighborhoods, with the famous places and monuments but also the less known aspects and secret spots. We’ll also learn about the small and subtle elements that make this city unique: the gastronomy and pastry, the urban materials, the music, the local traditions, and the particular spirit of the “Lisboetas”, the Lisbon inhabitants. We’ll also explore the variety of neighborhoods, which allow for a direct view of its rich and millenary past: from the labyrinthine Moorish and Jewish medieval streets to the glorious monuments of the Discoveries Age period to the small cafes with a literary and cosmopolitan nineteenth-century atmosphere to today’s contemporary architecture and projects.

We’ll also note the geography of the city: Lisbon is mainland Europe's westernmost capital, located at the extreme of the Iberian peninsula, in the Tagus River estuary. This particular geographical position always defined and transformed its character: a city turned to the Atlantic Ocean while maintaining its Mediterranean nature, one arm extended to Europe and the other to the distant vast world(s).

Led by an expert on Architecture and Art History, Tiago Miranda Neiva, this interactive seminar will present the historical, social and architectural Lisbon background. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better knowledge of the city of Lisbon, its historical evolution, and its different atmospheres. After the seminar, it will be easy to see why Lisbon has become one of the most awarded tourist destinations in recent years.

Tiago Miranda Neiva was born and raised in Lisbon. He studied architecture in Rome and worked later in distinct offices in Portugal and Spain. For several years he was Professor of Arts and Art History, having a Master's degree in Teaching of Visual Arts. He is currently working towards a PhD focused on the Art and Architecture of al-Andalus: the confluence between the Arab, Jewish and Christian medieval world. In recent years he has been working as a tour guide in his hometown, seeking to show and reveal its most intimate secrets through an authentic and passionate local vision.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

need closed captioning

This is a review not of the contents but of Closed Captioning. I am deaf and need CC for any Zoom. Had I known there wouldn't be any CC, I wouldn't have signed up for this. My wife had to translate so we both missed a great deal of the talk. Will there be CC in the future talks?

Great Introduction to Lisbon Before Our Trip

Tiago Neiva's Lisbon: The City of Seven Hills presentation was a great primer for anyone making their first trip to Lisbon. Tiago provided a great blend of history and a description of the varied neighborhoods that left me very excited to go to Lisbon. I highly recommend taking Tiago's course.

Excellent overview

Having visited Lisbon for a week 3 years ago, I had a basic idea of the organization of neighborhoods and some of the principal tourist sites. However, I am now planning to return with a group of students so wanted a deeper understanding of the history and spatial understanding of Lisbon. This served my purposes well. In particular, Tiago, in an enthusiastic presentation, gave a good overview of the historical development of the city and how different neighborhoods reflect the influences of various periods and cultures. This will give me a much firmer grounding on future visits as well as a good idea of some of the important but sometimes overlooked places to visit. Additionally, Tiago was able to give a number of useful tips scattered throughout his presentation.
