Gavin received a Ph.D. in history from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and came to Kyoto in 2001. He is a Ph.D. professor of history at Doshisha University. His teaching and research revolve around Japan's cultural encounters with the West, particularly during the Edo, Meiji, Taisho and early Showa periods (1600-1940), and he has published on the history of foreign tourism and of Protestant missionaries in Japan. To further explore Japan's global cultural encounters, he is currently writing a book on the history of Japanese menswear from the 1600s through the early 20th century. Please give a huge thank you to Dr Campbell for such an illuminating and interesting series of seminars, delivered in such an engaging manner; I learned so much and hope to visit Japan one day!
This is an excellent course Dr Campbell delves behind the simple Cmdr Perry and his Black Ships to provide the context behind this event, and shows it as part of a series of events and political and commercial forces across many nations. Fascinating stuff.
The 3-part course was better than expected. Dr. Campbell did a great job of making it interesting and informative. Breaking it into the three viewpoints enabled a deeper dive into the reasons for the US, Japan and post entry outcomes. There was ample opportunity for questions and discussion.
Gavin Campbell is an excellent speaker, who is clear and articulate. He delivers an excellent presentation in part 1 of a 3 part series. His visuals, video and stills, are relevant and to the point. He has command of his material and the confidence and an easy going manner that invites questions and insights of his audience. He covers a lot of material but provides concise summaries. I look forward to parts 2 and 3.
Dr. Campbell clearly and thoroughly explains this very interesting topic. I learned so much from him as always
