The beauty of the steep mountain slopes adorned with lemon-groves juxtaposed with the deep blue and emerald green waters of the Mediterranean Sea is hard to beat. Only one road connects the famous towns of Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, cutting through the rock in a succession of crags, high valleys, and steep climbs. This conversation will explore the splendors of Amalfi’s coast both on land and at sea as we virtually travel to one of Italy’s most iconic coastlines.

The small villages dotted along the Amalfi Coastline are dominated by majolica-tiled domes of picturesque churches and are characterized by flights of steps and tiny roads, which lead to elegant houses, breath-taking villas, and luxurious hotels. From this stunning coastline, we’ll take a virtual sail across to the three very distinct islands in the bay of Naples.

We’ll start on the island of Capri, where Tiberius spent the last 10 years of his life. Capri has also been recognized as a romantic destination for poets and artists ever since the Grotta Azzurra was rediscovered in 1826. From a bohemian holiday to a mandatory stop on the jet-set circuit and then to a tourist attraction for the masses, this rocky island never ceases to amaze visitors with its unique mix of natural beauty, Mediterranean-style architecture, and celebrity glamor. We’ll learn about the steep limestones cliffs that create that deep blue color of the water for which Capri is famous for: hence the name “Blue Island”.

We’ll move to the other two islands, Ischia and Procida. Despite their location in the same bay, we’ll discuss how their different geological composition. Ischia, also known as the “Green Island” for its green tufa rock, was the first Greek colony to be founded on Italian soil. Its archaeological museum boasts one of the earliest surviving examples of verses written in Greek. Despite intense urbanization, Ischia offers much beauty in the vineyards along the slopes of its lush mountains and abundant thermal springs and baths. We’ll explore the smallest island, Procida, as we learn how it is the most densely populated island in Europe. Its outline is characterized by pretty, pastel-colors houses, which make a superb contrast to the dark, volcanic, sandy beaches.

This virtual tour is designed to introduce visitors to the history and leisurely culture of this Southern part of Italy, along with an introduction to the local food and wine. Led by an expert on art history, Fiorella Squillante, this interactive seminar will enlighten curiosity and deepen participants' understanding of this stunning section of Italy.

Fiorella Squillante holds a degree in modern languages and art history, a post-graduate course in education and didactics and a master-course in exhibition design. She is a specialist in art history and Neapolitan culture and art. She works with the main museums of Naples as a member of the education department. She also works closely with Friends of Museums from abroad. Fiorella is the president of the cultural association “Fine Arts”, which organizes private viewings and themed routes in Naples and Campania, and visits to stately homes and private collections. She writes about Naples and Campania for a popular guide book and is the author of “Naples in 3 Days”, a guide to Neapolitan art and architecture and a book for children and teenagers called “Pompeii is Cool!“.
