"Can you see anything?”, “Yes, wonderful things!”. This was Carter's response to an anxious Lord Carnarvon, as he peered by the light of a candle inside the newly unearthed tomb. Discovered on November 4, 1922, the tomb of Tutankhamun still constitutes one of the greatest discoveries ever made in Egypt since it was found almost intact: a very rare circumstance. This conversation will follow the important discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

We’ll start our seminar by learning how the tombs rooms were densely packed with burial gifts despite having been robbed twice in antiquity. It took almost 10 years to empty the burial, as Carter meticulously recorded all the findings, and the material was transported to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Still today people are mesmerized by the wonderful funerary objects such as, for example, the iconic golden mask.

This conversation will be an opportunity to retrace the history of the discovery and excavation, to see who was Tutankhamun–the child king who ruled for about nine years–and the great political and social revolutions of his time. We will talk about the structure of the tomb and of its painted decorations. We will feast our eyes on the most incredible objects found and on their meanings, with the aim of better understanding the Egyptian conception of the afterlife. Finally, we will discuss the studies made on Tut’s mummy and the various hypothesis about his early death (was he killed or was he sick? Or both?).

Led by an expert on Egyptology, Dr. Jade Bajeot, this interactive seminar will give an overview of this incredible discovery that still makes one dream. From the organization of the excavation to the historical period in which Tutankhamun lived and died… Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of a very famous historical figure such as Tutankhamun and the equally famous discovery of his tomb.

Jade Bajeot has an MA in Egyptology, where her dissertation focus was on the ancient Egyptian fortification system. For her PhD in Archaeology she specialized in the prehistory of Egypt, in particular the unpublished data of the Italian excavations carried out in the predynastic site of Maadi (Cairo). During her PhD she spent six months in Cairo, at the French Institute of Archaeology (Ifao) where she had the opportunity to visit several archaeological sites. In 2014 she started to collaborate with the French mission that digs at Tell el-Iswid, a predynastic site located in the Nile Delta. She still works at Tell el-Iswid as a specialist in ceramic technology. She also had the opportunity to work at Tell el-Fara'in/Buto and Tell el-Samara (Nile Delta). She has published several papers on the subject and her PhD thesis has been published as a monograph.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.
