History is shaped by geography. How did the landscape, resources, and geographical location shape Athens? Which are the main periods of its history, and how do we define them? Which are the city’s most important sites, what was their function in the ancient city? Where are they located? How were they connected and what do we know about the ancient city’s road network? How has archaeological research changed our knowledge of Athens over time? How has Athens itself changed over time?
Led by Aristotle Koskinas, an Archaeologist, Licensed Guide, and expert on Athens, this lecture will teach us about the Archaeology of Ancient Athens. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of how Athens was in its heyday and how it evolved over time. They will also get a glimpse of how archaeologists piece together what the city looked like by fragments unearthed between – and below – modern structures.

Aristotle Koskinas studied classical archaeology, specializing in the study of roof tiles. For several years, he participated in various excavations conducted by the Greek Ministry of Culture. He took part in surface survey projects conducted by the University of Thessaly, among others. In 2003, he graduated from the Greek School of Tourist Guides, and has been working as a guide ever since. He lectures on Greek history and archaeology, while continuing to study and publish material from Ministry of Culture excavations. He also participates in historical reenactment events.

Great!

An expert in his field of archeology, Aristotle is an excellent teacher and guide to Athens over the ages. My family is planning a trip to Athens, and the photos, diagrams, etc. were important to better understand the many civilizations that have inhabited and ruled this area and created such magnificent architecture and culture. The lecture gave me a good foundation and was eye-opening. Thank you so much for sharing, Aristotle.
