This was an excellent seminar and I am so glad I signed up.I have always been very interested in these historic roads, and the paths that people travelled thousands of years ago. To think! The Appian Way was begun in 312 BC! It's kind of hard to wrap my head around all the history that took place on that famous road. For those interested in or engineering, or building, this is so much more than history. It's a fascinating story of why the Romans were able to conquer so much of the world. Livia is so great at conveying the passion she has for these subjects. It's amazing how much knowledge she has. I definitely have to do an in person tour of the Appian Way the next time I am in Rome! I can't wait to be there again.
Great talk from one of my favorite presenters.
Full of interest and with some lovely photos. A nice way to spend a chilly winter's evening dreaming of summer in Rome!
Dr Galante's program was most interesting, as all her talks are!! As a result of watching this thorough presentation about the history, building, usage, and appearance of the Appian Way in modern times, I really gained an appreciation for this Roman marvel. Her use of informative maps, sketches portraying the past construction techniques, the Google Earth views with a red line denoting the Appian Way -- enhanced my understanding of this road. Livia punctuates her facts with analogies and humor making listening to her courses so easy. She is passionate about her topic and it shows. It was wonderful to learn about the ancient times but also the modern times (emperors who build their residences and mausoleums along the route to the addition to villas built by 1950s elite (movie stars, fashion designers).
This is a wonderful Conversation that ties rusher together many unsung archeological gems of the Eternal City. Livia Galante's enthusiasm for her subject is positively contagious. I learned so much.
