Join us for a journey across the Irish countryside –– contextualizing magical tales of enchanted fairy-forts, witch-hunts, and warrior battles on-site of locations where they actually existed. Wandering the haunted castles and tombs of Ireland’s fiercest tribes, saints, and spirits we will learn about the real-life landscapes and towns where these larger-than-life legends once ruled.
Exploring legends older than the Arthurian collection, inspired by the Norse and the Celts, we will gaze at the Celtic stone crosses which taught the early teachings of Christianity, hieroglyphics that marked the ancient calendar of the year, standing stones (think beyond Stonehenge) that screamed the name of the rightful kings, and tomb chambers which acted as liminal spaces between the world of the living and the dead. Join us to unravel the stories behind the stones of Ireland's Ancient East.
We’ll also explore the landmark sites such as:
  • The Village of Kells, where the book was penned
  • The famous passage tomb of Newgrange
  • The Hill of Tara, home to the High Kings
  • Lough Crew, where witches once created challenges for rulers of the island
  • Additional iconic prehistoric and medieval monuments along the way
Led by an archaeologist, anthropologist, and lover of stories, Jennifer Carbery, this interactive seminar will explore a selection of Ireland’s most intriguing heritage sites -- explaining both their historical importance and the legends that they have inspired. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an insight into the culture and folklore of some of Ireland’s most magical and mysterious destinations and villages.

Exploring Ancient Ireland - Folklore and Facts

Jennifer's talk was eye opening. She started with the source material for most of the myths, then wove that into how the myths and the landscape all blend to make for a magical talk.

Discovering Ancient Ireland

A lot of tantalizing material was covered in an all too short hour and a half. I had visited two of the sites that were reviewed but Jennifer's talk made me aware of how much more history was there than I realized.

Fabulous Ireland

Jennifer did a great job covering a few of the many ancient sites in Ireland, relating their discovery stories and how they were used by the ancient peoples. The latter involves early myths as told on manuscripts dating back to the 700's AD which are held in various Irish institutions. Jennifer is a fluent storyteller and her enthusiasm just grabs you and draws you in. This would be a great event for anyone of Irish descent.
