The small kingdom of The Netherlands has a lot more to offer than Amsterdam with its UNESCO-listed city center, its waterways, and its well-known museums such as the Rijksmuseum, the Vincent van Gogh museum, and the Anne Frank House. Indeed, The Hague can boast to have one of the finest bijoux museums in the world: the Mauritshuis Museum with Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring.

During this conversation Dr. Alette Fleischer will highlight many can't-miss cultural attractions that you can visit whilst on holiday in Amsterdam. Most of the trips we'll discuss are quite easy to do with transport – Dutch railways are tightly knit and run like clockwork. From Amsterdam, a 20-minute train ride will take us to the lovely town Haarlem, with its grand market square, the Frans Hals museum, Teylers Museum, and the ancient Saint Bavo-church and its impressive organ where Mozart had played. But there are plenty of equally lovely cities within a 60-minute train journey away: Alkmaar and its cheese market, Hoorn and Enkhuizen along the Zuiderzee, Utrecht that boasts a wonderful Medieval Art Museum “Catharine’s Convent”, Delft, the hometown of the painter Vermeer and Delft blue ceramics, and the harbor city of Rotterdam, with its very modern architecture, fancy art galleries, and museums.

Together we will also explore suggestions for outdoor activities such as bicycling, sailing, and hiking. The Netherlands is among the most popular starting point for pilgrimages to both Rome and Santiago de Compostela! Needless to say; I will provide you some tips on what and where to eat and drink during your excursions.

Led by Dr. Alette Fleischer, an expert on 17th-century Dutch art and culture, and a native from Amsterdam, this interactive seminar will introduce a variety of Holland’s worthwhile monuments, museums, and day trips (and how to get there) for first-time visitors and seasoned travelers. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with ideas to go both on and off the beaten path, and how to get the maximum ‘Holland experience’ in a short span of time.

Amsterdam-born Alette Fleischer has a degree in Art History and a PhD in 17th Dutch History, focusing on gardens, science, and technology. She has curated several exhibitions, publishes articles, presents lectures, and a proud Context Expert. For Context Travel, Alette has led the Rijksmuseum tours many times. Motto: staying curious is key for being a good historian.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

What a beautiful narrative of the top 10 highlights of the Netherlands! Dr. Fleischer loves her country and it shows through her passionate and delightful showcasing of places to see and things to experience while visiting here. Makes you want to jump on a plane and go right away.

I have always been fascinated by the Netherlands - the tulips, the windmills and dikes, the art, the food, the history! I look forward to participating in any of Dr. Fleischer's conversations that I can schedule in, and this one was really wonderfully presented.
Thank You.

The Netherlands beyond Amsterdam

Dr. Fleischer eloquently described with well chosen video/photo support an intellectually and visually enticing country. We are going to Amsterdam next week and have rerouted our trip to include some of her suggestions! She presented options, we, who have been there before didn’t know about. Hope she is our Context guide next week:)
