During this live virtual tour, we are visiting some of the highlights of the Westside of Amsterdam. Together we will enjoy 360º views as we stroll from the Munttoren (Mint Tower) to the flower market; we will follow some of the city's primary canals, but also step into the shopping area called “The Nine Streets” with its funky shops. Moving further in a northwestern direction, we will pass by the Westerkerk (Western Church – the burial place of Rembrandt), and pause to admire the exterior of the Anne Frank House. Meandering through the small streets of the Jordaan area, we end this walk at the Northern Church.

We will be covering quite some ground and we will encounter tourists' highlights and unknown treasures, as well as yesteryears' wealth and destitution. The houses along the canals were for the rich merchants, the Jordaan area was for the laborers and the poor. How different it is now! The original inhabitants of the Jordaan sold their houses for good money to the new Young Urban Professionals. Today, it is now one of the most sought-after neighborhoods – but we can still find traces of the past.

Led by the expert local guide and cultural historian, Dr. Alette Fleischer, this interactive virtual tour will allow participants to experience the diversity of churches, canal mansions, houseboats, funky shops, and hidden alleys and learn about the rich history of Amsterdam. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased awareness of the city’s layered cultural history.

Amsterdam-born Alette Fleischer has a degree in Art History and a PhD in 17th Dutch History, focusing on gardens, science, and technology.
